Ben Everyman IConoplastic

"The music aims to be simple and familiar, skipping about genres like a retarded child, while the words cut lines of deep sarcastic scorn through the open door of the subconscious." - Ben Everyman

Ben Everyman IConoplastic

Listen to
Ben Everyman's
witty debut album IConoplastic

Saturday, February 12 at Cafe Deux Soleils.

1. Is Ben Everyman your real name? How did you come up with that?
The "Ben" is real, the "Everyman" is not. Well it is real, but it's not my real name.
Did you ever have someone say to you "Hey! You look like so-and-so.", usually in
reference to someone famous? It happens to me all the time. People have said I look like:
Dustin Hoffman, Al Pacino, several members of The Who, a retarded David Schwimmer, Spenny or Kenny from Kenny vs Spenny, Steve from Blue's Clues and many more. I've also had my sound compared to many people: Ween, The Eels, Leonard Cohen etc... So I guess you could say I was given the name.

2. What inspired you to make music?
The exact moment I decided to make music was listening to a friend play Stairway to Heaven on guitar. He had all the notes right, but he played it with a complete absence of feeling, like a computer program emulating a sheet of drywall... only worse. I said "Show me how to do that", so he did. I'm also inspired by the comical nature of everyday life. Escalators, animatronic characters and the process of applying makeup. Absurdity at its finest.

3. Imagine you’re watching a concert and one of the band members suddenly disappears into a cloud of black smoke. You get called to the stage to replace that band member. Who is that?
Devotchka, the girl who plays the tuba with the Christmas lights in it. But then I'd be like, "Fuck! I can't play tuba, I can barely play trumpet."

4. How has your music evolved since you first started playing music?
I found a love for simplicity that grows stronger by the day. When I started writing I
had normal aspirations, as most musicians (guitar players) do. I wanted to be in a rock
band and play awesome guitar solos to impress the panties off of girls and transgendered
people who identified as women. I'm a strong believer that less is more now. I want to
write a song using only one note - and make it listenable. I also no longer wish to
de-panty anyone. I've grown a lot.

5. Tell us about your upcoming album.
It's a stark, minimalist avant-garde indie-folk concept album. I think that covers all
the buzz words. Seriously, I want people to see how ridiculous things are. There's an old saying: Tell a man the normal is absurd and he'll know for a day - teach a man to see the absurd in the normal and he'll know forvever. The music aims to be simple and familiar, skipping about genres like a retarded child, while the words cut lines of deep sarcastic scorn through the open door of the subconscious.

6. What song are you currently listening too?

Hank Williams- Hey Good Looking

Quest For Fire
Nov 18    The Waldorf   Vancouver, BC
Nov 20    Little Big House  Kamloops, BC
Nov 21    Broken City Calgary, AB
Nov 26    The Garrison  Toronto, ON

1. When did your band form? How has your music evolved?
Mike- In 2007, mainly as a side project/excuse for us to get together once a week to drink and jam. The first record was just us jamming the same songs over and over until they felt right. The latest record was a little more focused in terms of Andrew or Chad coming in with a song and us just fine tuning it together.

2. Who writes your songs? Is there a main theme or topic for your songs?
Chad- Andrew and I, then we all put them together. The main topic is usually wide open spaces and tight corners. I always have the Canadian wilderness on my mind.

3. What has been the best moment as a band so far?
Mike- After driving all the way to South By South west to find out that our entire tour was canceled to get us home.. Oh wait, best moment? I thought our record release show in Toronto was pretty fun, and our after parties are usually pretty rad.

4. How does music affect the way you see the world?
Chad- It's a sea of skeletons driving around a rotting planet in barbie suvs while eating plastic.
Mike- It gives me a really bad love/hate relationship with the world.

5. What are the biggest challenges for your band?
Finding a way to quit our jobs so we can do this more often...and finding coffee.

6. What can fans expect in the future from you? What do you hope to accomplish?
Chad- European tour, new record, happiness.

7. What songs are you currently listening too?
Mike-
Electric Wizard - Funeralopolis
Neil Young - The Hitchhiker
Kittens - Great Dane
Chad-
Hoyt Axton- Revelations

1. When did your band form?
We formed March 2010 after most of us were kicked outta our old bands.

2. What inspired you to make music?
Darren- Richard Ashcroft from The Verve inspired me to make music, listening to him sing just blew my mind, I wanted to be that good, and Micheal Jackson but lets not talk about that haha.

3. What genre of music do you consider your music to be? Who are some influences?
Lick your ticket haha, our music isn't always stuck within structured lines, we give it room to move and let it take shape. Our influences are Black Rebel Motorcycle club, The Verve, Kasabian, Dead Meadow, Oasis and 100's more.

4. Who writes your songs? Is there a main theme or topic for your songs?
Darren- I write majority of the songs but Chris also helps with writing, We are very open minded everyone, adds there own parts. I don't want to tell people what to play, they can play whatever they want. The main topics for my writing are the struggle with Religion and love I guess. I don't believe in writing about shit I don't know.

5. What has been the best moment as a band so far?
Devan- The coolest thing to see is how the music so quickly takes a life of its own on stage. We have a handful of songs that always just kind of go where they wanna go, and we’re getting better at giving the music space to move and take shape.

6. How has your music evolved since you first started playing music together?
The band is very young, and while most of us have all played in bands before we’re definitely still easing into how we all work, on stage and off. We've been working on some higher energy songs lately but who knows where things will go. I would like to get into the psychedelic sounds more. I think that's what we will start focusing on. As long as we continue enjoying what we play, we're happy.

7.How can fans access your music? Do you have any albums out?
We just released an demo EP, which will be available at our upcoming vancouver shows. We start work on the new album in late Aug. you can check us out on myspace and  facebook. If you like what you hear you can send us your email address and we will send you some free tunes every month.

8. What song are you currently listening too?

Greg Yukon Blonde- Trivial Fires

Darren Black Rebel Motorcycle Club-Sweet Feeling

Tyler Woven Hand- Kicking Bird

Devan Earthless- Sonic Prayer

Chris Interpol- Lights

9. Is there anyone you'd like to acknowledge?
We have had a bunch of help from so many people; X92.9fm, Paige Woodbury, Paul Gervais , Aaron Crook, The Nix Dicksons, Beth Bannerman, Chelsea Kindrachuk, Mark Mills, Telly, Lionheart Radio, Kirstin Jar, Calgary bands, The Dog and Duck Pub, Darren Ollinger (the new black center), and the most AMAZING friends.
